How Do I Pick a Movie?

Picking a movie that doesn't make you fall asleep, or finding a film that you are truly interested in can be difficult, especially when you have seen a lot of movies over time and are running out of new ideas, or just don't know what you are looking for. There are a few ways that you can narrow down your choices, or that can help you find new ideas:

  1. There are several search engines online that are designed to help you pick a movie that you would like, but as with many search engines, sometimes you do need to really search. Aside from a simple Google search, which is not always very helpful, a few sites that are good tools are:
  2. Consult Wikipedia. Browse your favorite actors, directors, or titles.
  3. Search a movie database like IMDB. Some databases, like IMDB, offer suggestions at the bottom of their pages.
  4. Watch a critically acclaimed film. Many if not most awards, such as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, or the Golden Globes, all have lists of winning and nominated films that you could choose from.
  5.  Register for Netflix. Netflix is an affordable way to watch thousands of movies at home and even comes with a preference and suggestion tool that selects movies that may interest you based on a few questions about films and genres you enjoy.
  6. Re-watch a classic. Watching a movie that you loved when you were younger, or that you know by heart can be fun, and watching movies from when you were younger can also bring back many memories from times past. Its also always interesting to see how people dressed, talked, and acted way back when the film was made.
  7. Visit an online site that hosts films for you to watch free, such as Top Documentary Films. It has a huge collection of documentaries from many different genres, and it is a good, free alternative to Netflix if you are looking to save money.
  8. Ask a friend, or family member, or the person you are watching the film with to pick. Often not having to make the "what to watch" decision can be a relief, and who knows, maybe their taste in movies will allow you to watch a great movie that you other wise wouldn't have watched.
  9. Top 10 lists or any Top Film lists are always a good way to find popular movies that have amassed a large audience. A few good lists are:
  10.  Watch film trailers on YouTube or Apple, or any other site that hosts trailers to find one you like.
